Grab some peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jack and head out to McClure Field for the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Navy World Series Throwback Softball Game on June 30 as Naval Station Norfolk’s year-long centennial celebration continues. Pre-game activities kick off at noon, followed by a home run derby at 1:40 p.m. and first pitch at 2 p.m.
When the United States entered into World War II, many of the best Major League Baseball players in the country joined the service and eventually made Norfolk Naval Training Station their home. The base hosted a seven-game “Navy World Series” with lineups that rivaled any pro team from that time period. Gracing the diamond were notable pro players such as Phil Rizzuto, Pee Wee Reese, Dominic DiMaggio and Eddie Robinson.
To honor that one-of-a-kind event, Naval Station Norfolk will return to that nostalgic time when it hosts the Navy World Series Throwback Softball Game.
