Alex Bowman, despite driving while suffering from a stomach bug, earned his career-best Sprint Cup finish on Sunday at Kansas Speedway.
Bowman, driving the No. 88 Chevrolet for Dale Earnhardt Jr., finished seventh. It was his sixth race as a substitute for Earnhardt, who is out of the car for the remainder of the season due to a concussion.
Now Bowman heads to Talladega Superspeedway, one of Earnhardt’s best tracks.
“Hendrick Motorsports brings such fast race cars to that race track, so I’m really excited,” Bowman said. “Their speedway stuff is amazing, always — especially the No. 88 — so I’m just really looking forward to having a chance to win.
“I’m going to sit Dale down and have a couple-hour discussion with him about speedway racing because if there’s a speedway racer left in this garage, it’s him, for sure.”
Earnhardt said earlier this month that he planned to be on the team’s pit box for Sunday’s race.
