Col. Andrew Bowes, Fort Eustis garrison commander, announced July 12 the Sand Pool will remain closed until a thorough review of management and safety procedures at the pool is complete.

Bowes directed all pools on Fort Eustis be closed after a 4-year old girl drowned at the Sand Pool July 12. The accident remains under investigation.

“Our top priority is to provide a safe swimming environment for all members of our community. Because of the unique environment at the sand pool, we will take the time required to conduct a thorough review of the tragic accident.”

“This is a terrible tragedy,” Bowes said. “Our condolences go out to the family and our prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

The remaining pools on the installation reopened Wednesday. Their hours of operation are:

Anderson Field House Pool

Monday through Friday – 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Aquatics Center

Adventure Pool

Monday through Saturday – noon to 7:45 p.m.

Sunday – 1-5:44 p.m.

Lap Pool

Monday through Friday – 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.

Saturday – 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.

Sunday – 1 to 5:45 p.m.

Community Club Pool

Daily – 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
